Why do you make a documentary about Daniel Johnston ?
J'ai été fasciné par la légende de Daniel Johnston depuis la fin des années 80 et j'ai passé 10 ans à compiler les coupures de presse sur les événements de sa vie. L'underground de 1988 s'est rapidement fait l'écho de cet incroyable jeune fou de Chester, en Virginie, auteur de centaines de chansons d'amour à sens unique pour une fille appelée Laurie qui épousa un employé de pompes funèbres. Des chansons qu'il enregistrait sur une cassette dans un sous-sol.  Quand j'ai entendu ces chansons pour la première fois et été exposé à cette émotion brute de l'art de Daniel, j'ai été touché au plus profond de moi. Cela m'a accompagné jusqu'à ce que la maladie mentale de Daniel lui permette de prendre place là où sa musique et son art atteignent la pureté et j'ai été fasciné.Dire que c'est devenu une obsession serait un euphémisme.
I have been fascinated with the legend of Daniel Johnston since the late 1980's and spent over a decade compiling clippings of the events of his life as they appeared in the press.  Word was quickly spreading through the underground in 1988 about this amazing crazy kid from Chester, West Virginia who wrote hundreds of songs of unrequited love about a girl named Laurie who married an undertaker and recorded all of his albums on a cassette recorder in his basement. When I heard these songs for the first time and was exposed to the raw emotion in Daniel's art it truly touched me on a molecular level and it has stayed with me since. It seemed that Daniel's mental illness allowed him to tap into a place where the music and art he was creating was truly unfiltered and I found it mesmerizing. To say it caused an obsession would be an understatement.

Daniel Johnston est le plus grand artiste vivant. Il est mon auteur de chansons préféré, mon comédien préféré et un véritable visionnaire. Daniel n'est PAS un artiste marginal juste parce qu'il est malade mental. Il a étudié les arts dans une école d'art et connaît l'histoire de l'art.
Daniel Johnston is the greatest living artist alive today. He is also my favorite songwriter, my favorite comedian, and a true visionary.  Also - Daniel is NOT an outsider artist just because he ismentally ill.  Daniel studied fine art, went to art school, and knows the history of art.

How do you work ?
J'ai travaillé quatre ans pour écrire, filmer et produire ce que je voulais dire sur la vie de Daniel, son art et sa musique. Pendant la production et la post production, j'ai gagné ma vie en réalisant des publicités télévisées. Ce fût un travail d'amour, maintenant achevé.
I worked on this film for four years shooting and editing and writing until it satisfied what I had to say about Daniel's life, art and music.  I supported myself by directing TV commercials during the production and post production.  It was a labor of love that is now finally complete.

Your reaction after the price at Sundance 2005 ?
Je suis très heureux des réactions des critiques et du public du festival Sundance mais surtout je suis content que Daniel Johnston et sa famille aiment le film. C'est très important pour moi. Ce fût aussi un grand honneur de recevoir le prix du meilleur réalisateur de documentaire du festival Sundance, ce qui aiderai le film à atteindre un plus large public et transmettre le message d'amour de Daniel au plus grand nombre.
I am very pleased by the critical and audience reaction at Sundance but most of all I am happy that Daniel Johnston and his family like the film - that means the most to me.  It was also a great honor to receivethe Best Director of a documentary award at Sundance - which will help getthe film out to more people and bring Daniel's message of love to the world.

J'espère vraiment que le film sera distribué en France. Je sais que Daniel Jonhston et Robert Crumb exposent actuellement à Paris. Il semblerait que les francais s'interessent maintenant à Daniel et à son travail, ce qui est magnifique. Les français ont toujours accueilli nos grands musiciens de jazz avec respect et j'espère qu'il se passera la même chose pour Daniel lorsque les francais connaîtront son immense contribution à l'art et à la musique.
I truly hope that the film is distributed theatrically in France. I do know that Daniel Johnston and R. Crumb recently did a two man art show in Paris - so it seems that the French are now getting turned on to Daniel and his work which is truly wonderful.  The French have always treated our great Jazz musicians with respect and I expect the same will happen for Daniel when the French people learn of his great contribution to art and music.
